Waves of Color has a vision to increase representation, resources, and social impact for women in surfing

Our Story
Waves of Color began as a surf and camp retreat in the Pacific Northwest, helping Women of Color (WoC) to discover surfing. After two summers of retreats along the Oregon coast, we saw the need for year-round support. What started as seasonal gatherings grew into surf mentorships, community surf meet-ups, and off-season activities like surf skating, paddleboarding, and virtual surf education.
Helen and Stephanie met through these efforts, with Helen mentoring Stephanie as a surf coach. That connection deepened their shared mission—to make surfing more accessible, increase representation, and uplift women in the water. After a year of planning, Waves of Color was officially founded in 2025.
Waves of Color's home base is located in San Diego, CA. But we are making waves across the West Coast—with plans to grow nationally. Our dreams are to make a global impact as our efforts expand.
Surfing is more than a sport—it’s a lifestyle. It challenges us, connects us, transcends cultures, and gives back more than we ever imagined.
About Waves of Color
Waves of Color's mission is to support the next generation of women to become surf leaders, coaches, mentors, and competitors.
We want to help create spaces where women feel welcome to grow in confidence, find connection, and build strength in and out of the water. Also, we want to share stories that inspire change.
Our goal is to build stronger and supportive surf leaders and communities for women around the world.
We will be raising funding for our programs through fundraising, grants, brand sponsorships, product sales, and content creation. 50% or more of scholarships and programming support WoC.

Waves of Color was born from my own surf journey. Fourteen years ago in California, I sat in a parking lot waiting for my first surf coach. They were an hour late, so I nearly left, but something told me to stay. That day, I caught my first wave just off the shore of Santa Monica Beach, and it changed the course of my life.
Surfing became my grounding force through struggles with mental health. It’s where I find peace, joy, and resilience. But over the years, I noticed how rarely I saw other women—especially Women of Color—in the lineup or coaching. I’ve had surf lessons where I was dismissed, underestimated, even brought to tears.
When I took a two-year sabbatical and traveled to over 20+ countries, I met countless women with similar stories—feeling unseen, unsupported, or unwelcome in the surf. That’s when I knew change was needed.
Waves of Color exists to create space, support, and representation for women in the surfing profession—to train more women coaches, build confidence, and foster a global surf community rooted in equity and belonging.

I grew up in Northern California, where summers meant running under redwoods and plunging into the icy Pacific. The ocean was always my happy place. But after years in the office grind, burnout hit hard. In 2021, I escaped to Hawaii to reconnect with family and ended up discovering my love for surfing. I was hooked from the first wave.
Back in Oregon, I joined local surf groups which is where I met Helen, who became my surf mentor. That connection sparked a shared vision: to create a space in surfing where Women of Color feel seen, supported, and empowered.
Through my own experiences in other outdoor sports, I’ve seen the barriers women face in leadership, access, and recognition. Co-founding Waves of Color is my way of challenging those systems and helping more women thrive in the water and beyond.
Now, we’re building something special—supporting, mentoring, and making sure more Women of Color feel at home in the water and in the surf world.

I come from a large Mexican-American family with roots in East Los Angeles. My parents moved to the westside of Los Angeles in the late 70’s and I grew up going to the beaches of Venice. Growing up near the ocean was such a gift and privilege. It has made being on a beach and being in the ocean feel familiar, and like home.
Having access to surfing and the ocean – here in California and the places I’ve been fortunate enough to travel – has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. Supporting the growth and mission of Waves of Color feels like a way of honoring that gift through reciprocity or giving back, and to me that kind of reciprocity is something that deepens my relationship with surfing.
